T
he youth working for Project New Life are assisting with the renovation of a single-family property located in the Lincoln-King neighborhood.  The work involves replacing appliances with Energy

Star rated ones, replacing bulbs with fluorescent lamps, weatherproofing the home, mulching around the trees and shrubs and regularly mowing with the electric mower leaving grass at 3" height or more.  The goal is to help improve the quality of affordable housing in the city of Racine.

The youth are learning skills in the areas of lawncare and landscaping, and developing homes that are more energy efficient.  After the home is renovated the home will be sold to a local resident who will enjoy a renovated home in the Lincoln - King neighborhood.

Tell us about yourself.
My name is DeMonte. I go to Horlick, and I like to play football and basketball.
Why did you apply?
I needed a summer job and I liked this one.
What job site were you assigned to?
Project New Life. We refurbish homes and tear certain things down.
Did you choose that site? Why or Why not.
Yes because I had done it before and liked it.
Do you enjoy it?
Yes I enjoy it alot.
Is it difficult? If so, what makes it hard.
No, it's not difficult for me.
What do you like most/least about your job?
The most is that I get payed for doing something that I like to do and I like the exercise.   I honestly don't beleive I have a least.
Do you enjoy your co-workers?
Yes, they are very nice to get along with.
Who is your team leader? Do you believe they are doing well?
Oscar Anguiano is my team leader and I believe he is doing a good job.
Is it what you expected?
Yes it is.
What motivates you to do well at work?
Trying to keep a job and doing a good job.
Is it a positive experience?
Yes.
What was your greatest achievement so far?
Just getting the job for me.
Who is your mentor?
My mother is my mentor.
What is a goal you plan to reach by the end of the summer?
Leaving with good experience.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Going to college to play a sport.
Define Success.
Doing well at something and keep progressing forward even though you have already reached the top.
Did you run into any problems on your job? If so, how did you fix them?
None as of right now.
Most valuable things learned?
Work ethic.
Would you do this program again?
Definitely.
Do you believe your ethic/performance improved?
A lot I think.
What type pf trainings would you like to see for next summer?
I think it would be good to have them talk a little less because some people tend to get bored really easy and have them let kids get to know each other on the first week instead of just putting them together. Thats just my opinion though.
Is there anything in the program that can change to make it more successful?
They pretty much got it covered.
Did anything in the program impress you?
How many people volunteered to help the youth out even though with a bad reputation they still wanted to give us a second chance.
If you were given the leadership role, do you think you could handle it?
Yes.
